  • Purpose: Screens for executive function impairment in ages 5–18 years (parent & teacher forms) & 11–18 years (self-report form)
  • Administration: Rating scale assessing executive functions
  • Age Range: 5 years to 18 years
  • Administration Time: 10 minutes
  • Qualification level: B

Features and Benefits

  • Parent, Teacher, and Self-Report forms are now discussed in one manual and have increased parallel structure. This content overlap, combined with the presentation of rater discrepancy base rates, makes examining multiple rater perspectives easy.
  • Useful for school psychologists, neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, behavior specialists, mental health practitioners, and researchers.
  • Contains more concise scales, which reduce the burden on the parent, teacher, and adolescent respondent.
  • Increased sensitivity to executive function: Items that distracted from sensitivity in key clinical groups (such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorder) have been eliminated.
  • Increased parallelism in item content, with most items shared between the Parent Form and Teacher Form and approximately half of the items also shared with the Self-Report Form.
  • New 12-item Parent, Teacher, and Self-Report screening forms quickly indicate whether executive function assessment is needed.
    • The screening form is appropriate for RTI coordinators, teachers, and school administrators.

Test Structure

  • Improved internal structure, with scales supported by factor analysis and three indexes consistent with widely accepted theory: Behavior Regulation, Emotion Regulation, and Cognitive Regulation.
  • The Parent/Teacher Forms contain 63 items within nine theoretically and empirically derived and well-validated clinical scales that measure commonly agreed upon domains of executive functioning: Inhibit, Self-Monitor, Shift, Emotional Control, Initiate, Working Memory, Plan/ Organize, Task-Monitor, and Organization of Materials.
  • The Self-Report Form contains 55 items within seven theoretically and empirically derived and well-validated clinical scales that parallel the Parent and Teacher forms: Inhibit, Self-Monitor, Shift, Emotional Control, Task Completion, Working Memory, and Plan/Organize.
  • In addition to the two validity indicators on the original BRIEF, a new Infrequency Scale helps identify unusual responding.
  • No new items were added to the clinical scales, allowing for consistency of data collection between the BRIEF and the BRIEF2.

Technical Information

  • Large, nationally stratified standardization sample is matched by age, gender, ethnicity, and parent education level to U.S. Census proportions.
  • Clinical data provide support for evidence-based assessment and interpretation of clinical profiles.
  • New reliable change statistics make it easy to measure the significance of change in scores over time.
  • Reliability coefficients for Parent Form and Teacher Form are above .90, and above .80 for the Self-Report Form.
  • The BRIEF2 is correlated with other measures of behavior and IQ, including the CBCL, BASC-2, Connors-3, ADHD-RSIV, RIAS, WISC-IV, and WAIS-IV.
