Hazard Technology Portable Fume Hoods are simple yet widely used and successful means for removing hazardous fumes, vapors, and particles from the laboratory.

Our hoods protect personnel and the environment from contamination by drawing air through the hood and into our seamless filters. Continuous airflow across the work surface directs contamination away from the user, through the filter(s) and then recycles clean air back into the laboratory.

At the heart of our Portable Fume Hoods and Downdraft Tables is the Blower Box. This is the work horse of the system and, largely, the reason our systems are so effective.

Filter options include:

• Carbon (Charcoal) - rids the work area of hazardous fumes and vapors.

• HEPA - used for containment of particles - toxic powders, asbestos, lead, latent fingerprint powder, etc.

• Potassium Permanganate - safely absorbs and neutralizes formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde fumes.

• Polyester – generally used for dust prevention and as a pre-filter in combination with HEPA filters

*Filters may be stacked for mixed use applications*

You can find Filters for Portable Fume Hoods, Downdraft Tables and Workstations Here

Please Note: Upon arrival, our Hoods do NOT contain a Filter. A Filter MUST be installed for proper function.

Without a Filter, the system offers no protection from hazerdous fumes, vapors, or particles.

Filters should be changed regularly and according to your specific use and needs. Even without use, once a filter has been installed, it should be changed at least once per year. Failure to replace the filter increases the risk that your hood will not provide appropriate protection from hazardous materials.

Face Velocity

Expressed in units of feet per minute (fpm) Face Velocity is defined as the average velocity of the air passing through the opening (face) of the fume hood. Maintaining an appropriate face velocity is critical in keeping users safe since it is the air flow, through the hood’s opening, that draws contaminants away from and protects the user.

Acceptable Face Velocity

The U.S. Federal OSHA recommends a face velocity from 60-100 fpm.

The American National Standard for Laboratory Ventilation ANSI/AIHA Z9.5, 3.3.1: Recommend an average face velocity 80-100 fpm.

The California State Occupational Safety and Health Administration (CAL-OSHA) mandates 100 fpm as the minimum average face velocity with a minimum of 70 fpm at any point in the sash (opening).
