The materials included in Practical Ideas That Really Work for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders focus on the most effective and widely-used ideas, based on a comprehensive review of autism spectrum disorders. The two main components of Practical Ideas That Really Work for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders are a Book and an Evaluation Form.

The Book includes:

• 1-page explanation of each idea
• Helpful tips to increase each idea’s effectiveness
• Helpful illustrations and examples
• Reproducible materials for most ideas

The Book contains 37 instructional strategies that can be used to improve a student’s social interaction and communication to decrease repetitive/stereotypical patterns of behavior.

The Evaluation Form consists of two components:

1. Rating Scale
2. Ideas Matrix

The Rating Scale evaluates behaviors that interfere with student learning and social interactions. Scale items are behavior descriptions that align with the DSM-IV indicators for autistic disorder and asperger’s disorder. Additionally, many of the items apply to childhood disintegrative disorder and Rett’s disorder.

Rating Scale results are useful in selecting possible solutions for increasing desired behaviors, or improving problem behaviors, from the Ideas Matrix. The Ideas Matrix systematically links the Rating Scale results to appropriate intervention ideas.
