Neuropsychological Assessment of Adults with Visual Impairments (NAAVI) Tactual Formboard Test

Neuropsychological Assessment of Adults with Visual Impairments (NAAVI) Tactual Formboard Test

The NAAVI Tactual Formboard Test, a part of the NAAVI test kit but also available for individual purchase, uses long-standing methods of non-visual assessment to provide multiple scores about spatial understanding, spatial learning, and memory, which have implications for strategies for teaching spatial awareness.

NAAVI Tactual Formboard Test (TFBT)

The NAAVI Tactual Formboard Test (TFBT) is a subtest from the Neuropsychological Assessment of Adults with Visual Impairment (NAAVI) Kit (31736) that can be purchased individually.

The TFBT is an assessment of spatial understanding, spatial learning, and memory.  The NAAVI author, John Gallagher, has stated that this is the most informative subtest in the NAAVI kit.  The test can give immediate information to the examiner about the examinee's ability to learn new spatial information, which has implications for the examinee's ability to learn spatial information in the environment, a major determinant for independence.

The test has puzzle-like holes on one side with 10 pieces.  On the other side is an outline of those shapes to assess memory for object locations.  The materials are made from a dense, durable, and cleanable plastic.

It assesses:

  • Sustained Attention
  • Memory
  • Planning
  • Spatial Understanding

The NAAVI Tactual Formboard Test (31736F) includes the formboard and 10 pieces.

If purchasing the NAAVI TFBT separate from the NAAVI Kit (without having access to a NAAVI Kit), the NAAVI Manual (31736M) should also be purchased to obtain normative scores and the TFBT Score Form (reproducible from the manual).
