Developmental Assessment of Young Children- Second Edition (DAYC-2) is an early childhood test, measuring within all Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) domains, yielding scores for receptive and expressive language, motor development, and socio-emotional functioning–now with simplified administration and items re-worded for clarity.

Measures the five domains mandated by IDEA–now with simplified administration and items re-worded for clarity

Judith K. Voress and Taddy Maddox

  • Age Range: Birth through 5 years
  • Time: 10-20 minutes for each domain

The DAYC-2 is a popular test to identify at-risk children with possible delays in:

  • Cognition
  • Communication
  • Social-Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Adaptive Behavior

Domains can be assessed independently, only testing areas of concern; or all five domains can be administered, when a measure of general development is desired. It can also be used in arena assessment, with each discipline using the evaluation tool independently.

The DAYC-2 obtains information about a child’s abilities through:

  • Observation
  • Caregiver Interviews
  • Direct Assessment

Subdomain scores are provided for Receptive Language, and Expressive Language, within the Communication Domain. Gross Motor and Fine Motor scores are provided in the Physical Development Domain.

Numerous validity studies, including studies of the DAYC-2's sensitivity and specificity, have been provided.  All new normative data were collected in 2009-2011. The DAYC-2 was normed on a national sample of 1,832 children; characteristics of the normative sample approximate the 2010 census. Standard scores, percentile ranks, and age equivalents are provided for each domain, and for overall general development, if all five domains are tested.
.
The DAYC-2 Kit includes 25 each of the Cognitive, Communication, Physical Development, Social-Emotional Development, Adaptive Behavior Scoring forms and Examiner Summary Sheets, as well as a 25 Mini Poster-Pack of Early Childhood Development Charts and a Manual.
