Elizabeth Carrow-Woolfolk, PhD

  • Age Range:  3-21 years
  • Time:  5-10 minutes for each subtest
  • 45 minutes for General Language Ability Index
  • Restricted Use:  Level C

Ideal for measuring delayed language, spoken language disorders, dyslexia, and aphasia, the Comprehensive Assessment of Spoken Language, Second Edition (CASL-2) is an individually administered, research-based oral language assessment battery for individuals ages 3 through 21. It provides a precise picture of language processing skills and structural knowledge, allowing clinicians to document development from preschool through the postsecondary years. Because the CASL provides age-based norms, it satisfies IDEA requirements for identifying language impairment.

The CASL-2 is comprised of 14 stand-alone, individually administered performance tests, requiring no reading or writing.  It measures the oral language processing skills of comprehension and expression, across four categories:

*Lexical/Semantic           *Syntactic           *Supralinguistic                *Pragmatic

The 14 CASL-2 subtests are:

  1.  Receptive Vocabulary
  2. Antonyms
  3. Synonyms
  4. Expressive Vocabulary
  5. Idiomatic Language
  6. Sentence Expression
  7. Grammatical Morphemes
  8. Sentence Comprehension
  9. Grammatical Judgment
  10. Non-literal Language
  11. Meaning from Context
  12. Inference
  13. Double Meaning
  14. Pragmatic Language

Results of the CASL-2 provide 14 individual test scores, and six Index scores:

  • General Language Ability Index (overall skill)
  • Receptive Language Index
  • Expressive Language Index
  • Lexical/Semantic Index
  • Syntactic Index
  • Supralinguistic Index

The Single Most Useful Oral Language Assessment

Compatible with IDEA specifications, the CASL is an excellent way to measure oral language skills and is unique in its coverage of the literal, figurative, and social aspects of language. It can be used with students from preschool through young adulthood, regardless of reading ability or impairment. It’s easy to administer and score. And it provides a sound basis for intervention planning.

The CASL-2 Kit includes 10 Comprehensive Forms; Easels 1, 2 and 3 and a Manual.
