A multidimensional assessment of adult ADHD.

The CAARS scales measure the presence and severity of ADHD symptoms in adults, so that you can determine whether or not ADHD is a contributing factor to an individual’s difficulties. Suitable for clinical, research, rehabilitation, and correctional settings, the CAARS scales quantitatively measure ADHD symptoms across clinically significant domains, while examining the manifestations of those symptoms.
The CAARS scales provide a multiple-informant assessment with self-report and observer ratings. They address the same behaviors and contain identical scales, subscales, and indexes. Both are available in long, short and screening versions, all with impressive reliability and validity data. The long versions of each have 66 items and contain 9 empirically derived scales that assess a broad range of problem behaviors including:
- Inattention/Memory Problems
- Hyperactivity/Restlessness
- Impulsivity/Emotional Lability
- Problems With Self-Concept
Also included on the long forms are 3 DSM-IV ADHD symptom measures and an ADHD Index that identifies respondents who might benefit from a more detailed clinical assessment. In addition, an Inconsistency Index alerts you to random or careless responding.
The short versions of each form contain abbreviated versions of the long-form subscales, plus the ADHD and Inconsistency Indexes. The screening versions include the ADHD Index and the DSM-IV ADHD Symptom Subscales (18 items). These forms are ideal when time is limited.
Studies show that ADHD is found in correctional settings at a relatively high rate and that adults with ADHD are at an especially high risk to recidivate. The Conners’ Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS): For Use in Correctional Settings Supplement uses a vast research base that was validated on a large adult correctional sample to identify inmates with ADHD.
Norms for the Self-Report forms are based on a sample of more than 1,000 nonclinical adults (ages 18-80), while norms for the observer report are derived from the ratings of spouses, family members and friends of 943 nonclinical adults (ages 18-80). Norms are separated by age intervals and gender.
